On Monday 29th of January Fiona Kavanagh visited our school to discuss the importance of Road Safety. She brought a variety of educational tools to help get her message across; these included VR headsets and beer googles. Fiona used practical activities to demonstrate the dangers of using a phone when driving. She got the students to try and type a basic text message while simultaneously bouncing a tennis ball; dropping the ball representing driver error or a crash. According to international research distracted driving could be a factor in as many 20-30% of all collisions in this country. This means that driver distraction could be a contributory factor in over 1,400 fatal and injury collisions annually. Fiona’s approach helped drive home key messages as many of our students prepare of their theory tests and learning how to drive.
