1st year Soccer Munster A Cup

1st year soccer kicked off today with a 2-2 draw versus a strong Tramore side. We started well with a Tommy Bourke goal in the first 5 minutes. Tommy met a cross field ball from Jay O'Gorman playing down the right. 20 minutes in and we nearly scored again, Harry Farrell doing well down the centre of the pitch holding up the ball and then turning to put a ball out to Jay, who then crossed in again with Tommy almost reaching it.

ERSS were the better team up to this and our back line held firm not allowing Tramore any real chances. Craig O'Donnell and Shay Commins allowed very little past them at centre-back and our full backs Jay O'Gorman and Alex O'Dwyer were immense. Our midfielders worked incredibly hard to keep Tramore back, Jack Torpey Walsh covered every blade of the pitch and was a strong presence all game. As we approached half time we were very unlucky to concede from a corner via an own goal deflection, which took the ball just past our keeper Eoin Connolly, who had controlled the box very well throughout the first half. We were very unlucky to go in at half time level.

In the second half, Tramore came out strong and won a corner in the first few minutes, which they took well and headed home. At 1-2 down the whole team kept their heads up and played with just as much intensity as the first. We had a number of chances to level. Rhys Prenderville came close with a free kick and again from a well worked corner. Cian Norris tested their keeper with a shot from outside the box but the Tramore side dug in at this point and forced us into a change. Evan Walsh came on to replace Adam Moran. Adam had worked tirelessly down the right all game, with many dribbles leading to corners and balls into the box. Jay O'Gorman pushed up the field and we started to have some joy getting Harry Farrell in behind. One of these lead to a penalty as Harry was taken down, which he buried bottom corner.

We came close again in the last minutes, with Jay and Harry combining again and Rhys making many good runs, but we just couldn't get past a very strong Tramore back line. A draw puts us 2nd in our group, and a win or draw next game should see us qualify for the next round.

A very impressive performance from our 1st year team today and we look forward to many successful years with this young group of talented players.
