Billy Kelleher MEP visited the Transition Year EU Ambassador Programme students to deliver an engaging and informative talk on the European Union. He began by explaining the origins of the EU, outlining how post-war cooperation between European countries grew into today’s political and economic union. He emphasised the EU’s core mission of maintaining peace, protecting democracy, and promoting unity across member states, helping students understand its continuing importance in modern society. Mr. Kelleher also spoke passionately about the role young people play in shaping the future of Europe. He encouraged students to get involved through youth initiatives, educational opportunities, and by staying informed about European issues that impact their lives. He highlighted that the next generation will be central to ensuring the EU remains strong, innovative, and forward-looking. One of the most impactful parts of his visit was his account of travelling to Ukraine during the outbreak of the war. He described the challenges faced by Ukrainian citizens, the devastation he witnessed, and the resilience of the people he met. He also explained the EU’s response and why international cooperation is essential during times of crisis. His first-hand experience gave students a deeper understanding of how global events shape European policy and why the EU matters beyond its borders. Throughout the session, students asked a wide range of thoughtful, insightful questions about the EU, global politics, and his work as an MEP. Mr. Kelleher answered each one openly and in detail, encouraging students to think critically and engage confidently with complex international issues. The visit was highly inspiring and left students with a stronger understanding of the EU and their potential role within it.
