Our TY students had the privilege of exploring Ormond Castle, a remarkable historical treasure right here in Carrick-on-Suir. Originally built before 1315 and later acquired by the powerful Butler family, the castle has seen centuries of transformation. In the 1560s, Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormond, added a stunning Tudor-style manor house — the first of its kind in Ireland — inspired by his time at the court of Queen Elizabeth I. The castle’s architecture reflects its layered history: A 15th-century walled bawn with defensive towers A U-shaped Elizabethan manor with mullioned windows, oriel porch, and intricate plasterwork A restored gallery featuring carved fireplaces and Tudor motifs From medieval fortifications to elegant Elizabethan design, Ormond Castle is a living story of Ireland’s past — and it’s right on our doorstep! A brilliant day of learning, discovery, and appreciation for our local heritage. #TransitionYear #OrmondCastle #CarrickOnSuir #IrishHistory #OPW
