The Transition Year Youth Fire Service Programme was a structured, four-week initiative aimed at educating students on fire safety, providing insights into fire service careers, and equipping participants with basic fire marshal skills. Below is a summary of each week’s activities: Week 1: Fire Safety The first week focused on fire safety education. Students were introduced to essential fire prevention measures, how to identify fire hazards, and the proper response in case of a fire. The importance of fire alarms, extinguishers, and evacuation procedures were emphasized through practical demonstrations. Week 2: Careers in the Fire Service In Week 2, students explored various careers within the fire service. Firefighters, fire engineers, and administrative staff shared their experiences and discussed the qualifications, training, and personal skills required for different roles. This session provided insight into the diverse opportunities within the fire service, encouraging students to consider it as a career path. Week 3: Fire Marshal Training 1 The third week introduced students to the basics of fire marshal duties. Participants learned how to conduct fire risk assessments, oversee evacuation procedures, and use fire extinguishers correctly. This foundational training was designed to empower students to take leadership in fire safety in various environments. Week 4: Fire Marshal Training 2 & Fire Station Visit The final week included advanced fire marshal training, where students engaged in more complex evacuation scenarios and practiced communication techniques used in emergencies. The week concluded with a visit to a local fire station, where students got hands-on experience with firefighting equipment and observed daily operations, further reinforcing their understanding of the fire service. This programme successfully combined theoretical knowledge with practical experience, inspiring students to consider the fire service as a potential career while equipping them with valuable life skills in fire safety.
